How to exclude your own visits from GA4 (internal traffic filter)
Every time you, your team or your developer load the site, GA4 counts it. On a low-traffic site that is enough to distort your numbers and conversion rates. Here is how to filter your own visits out properly.
The IP-based method
- In GA4 Admin, open your web data stream, then Configure tag settings, then Define internal traffic.
- Add a rule matching your office and home IP addresses; GA4 stamps those hits with
traffic_type = internal. - In Admin, Data settings, Data filters, set the Internal Traffic filter to Active (it starts in Testing mode).
Remember most home connections have dynamic IPs that change, so this needs occasional upkeep.
When IPs will not work
If your team is remote or on mobile data, IP filtering is unreliable. A sturdier option is a developer or staff flag: set a cookie or URL parameter for your own people and use it to mark traffic as internal through Google Tag Manager, independent of IP.
Confirm it actually works
Leave the filter in Testing first and check the Test internal traffic dimension in Realtime to confirm your visits are being tagged, then switch it to Active. Filtering yourself out is one reason a site's conversion rate can look wrong, and separate from the bot and spam traffic problem, which needs a different fix.
