How to build a funnel report in GA4
A funnel report shows how many people make it from one step to the next, so you can see exactly where you are losing them. GA4 builds these in the Explore section, and once you have the events firing, it is quick to set up.
Before you start: the events must exist
A funnel is only as good as the events behind it. Each step is an event (view item, add to cart, begin checkout, purchase), so those must be firing correctly first. If a step never fires, the funnel will show everyone dropping there, which looks like a catastrophe but is really a tracking gap.
Building it
- In GA4, go to Explore and choose the Funnel exploration template.
- Add your steps in order, each tied to an event.
- Optionally make it a trended, open or closed funnel, and add a breakdown like device or channel.
Reading it well
- Look for the biggest single drop; that is where a fix pays off most.
- Break down by device to catch a step that fails only on mobile.
- Sanity-check the first step's size against reality, if it is tiny, your entry event is under-firing, not your funnel leaking.
