GA4 DebugView shows nothing (even though the tag is live)
DebugView is the tool for proving an event actually reaches GA4 in real time. The frustration: it sits stubbornly empty while you click around. Usually that is not a tracking failure, it is that you never entered debug mode.
DebugView only shows debug sessions
DebugView does not show all traffic, only sessions explicitly flagged as debug. If you have not enabled debug mode, your clicks go to the normal reports (with a 24 to 48 hour delay) and DebugView stays blank. That blank is expected, not a fault.
How to get your session in
- Install the Google Analytics Debugger Chrome extension and reload, or
- Use GTM Preview mode, which sets the debug flag automatically, or
- Send the
debug_modeparameter on your config.
Then your actions appear in DebugView within seconds.
When an empty DebugView is a real problem
If you are in debug mode and still see nothing, now it is real: the tag is not firing, is blocked by consent or an ad blocker, or the measurement ID is wrong. At that point cross-check with a tag that is not firing in GTM. DebugView is only useful once you know how to read its silence.
