Why GA4 sessions don't match your Google Ads clicks
Google Ads almost always reports more clicks than GA4 reports sessions from Google Ads, and a modest gap is completely normal. It only becomes a problem when the gap is large, which points to a tracking fault rather than the usual causes.
Why a gap is normal
- Clicks are not sessions: a click where the person bounces before GA4 loads is a click with no session.
- Consent: visitors who decline are a Google Ads click but not a fully tracked GA4 session.
- Ad blockers stop GA4 for some clickers, as covered in ad blockers and analytics.
- Multiple clicks, one session, and timezone differences between the two tools.
When the gap is too big
A gap of maybe 10 to 20% is ordinary. If GA4 shows far fewer sessions than that, suspect a real fault: auto-tagging turned off so GCLID is not passed, a slow landing page losing clickers before the tag fires, or the accounts not linked properly.
How to narrow it
Confirm auto-tagging is on in Google Ads and GCLIDs are arriving, speed up your landing pages so GA4 fires before people leave, and make sure consent is not silently dropping a big share. You will never get them identical, the two tools count different things, but you can get the gap down to the expected range. A large unexplained gap is worth a proper check.
