Primary vs secondary conversions in Google Ads

Google Ads lets you mark each conversion action as primary or secondary, and the difference is bigger than it sounds. Primary conversions drive your bidding; secondary ones are for reporting only. Mix them up and you tell the algorithm to chase the wrong goal.

What each one does

Why the split matters

If you mark a low-value action, like a newsletter signup or a mailto click, as primary, Smart Bidding optimises toward cheap signups instead of real sales, quietly wasting budget. Only your genuine goals, a purchase or a qualified lead, belong as primary.

How to set it up

  1. Make your true goal (purchase, qualified lead) the primary conversion.
  2. Set softer signals (add to cart, pageviews, micro-actions) as secondary for insight.
  3. If you import from GA4, avoid also having a native action for the same event as primary, or you double-count.

Done right, Google optimises toward money, not motion. This pairs with understanding conversion actions themselves.
