Your own domain showing as a referral in GA4
If datahound.agency shows up as a referral source to datahound.agency, something is handing GA4 a fresh session mid-journey. It inflates sessions, resets attribution, and makes your funnels look leakier than they are.
Why it happens
GA4 starts a new session when it sees a new referrer. If part of your own journey looks like an external site, usually a payment page, a subdomain, or a third-party checkout, the return trip is logged as a referral from your own brand. The original source (the ad or search that really drove the visit) gets overwritten.
The usual culprits
- A hosted checkout or payment provider (Stripe, PayPal, a booking tool) that bounces users off-site and back.
- Subdomains (shop.yoursite.com vs www.yoursite.com) without cross-domain linking.
- A separate app or help centre on another domain.
The fix
Add your own domains and any payment or checkout domains to GA4's unwanted referrals list (Admin, Data Streams, Configure tag settings, List unwanted referrals), and set up cross-domain measurement so the whole journey is one session. Get this wrong and your "Direct" and conversion attribution are quietly corrupted, which is why it often hides behind complaints that paid shows as organic.
