How to track PDF and file downloads in GA4
If people download brochures, price lists or spec sheets from your site, GA4 can count those as a measurable action, and even a conversion. Most of it is automatic, with a couple of gaps worth knowing.
The automatic file_download event
GA4's enhanced measurement fires a file_download event whenever someone clicks a link to a common file type: pdf, docx, xlsx, zip, mp4 and more. Switch it on in Admin, web data stream, Enhanced measurement. It captures the file name and extension as parameters automatically.
What it misses
- Unusual file types not on Google's default list.
- Downloads triggered by a button or script rather than a plain link.
- Files opened in a new tab via JavaScript, where the click is not a standard link click.
For those, fire a custom file_download event from Google Tag Manager with a click trigger matching your file paths.
Turning downloads into a reportable goal
If a download is a meaningful step, a lead magnet, say, mark the event as a key event so it counts as a conversion, and register the file-name parameter as a custom dimension so you can see which files actually get downloaded.
