How to track new vs returning customers in GA4 ecommerce

Knowing whether revenue comes from new customers or repeat buyers changes how you spend. GA4 has a new-vs-returning view built in, but cookie limits make it optimistic about how many customers are truly new.

How GA4 decides new vs returning

GA4 marks a user new when it sees no prior cookie for them, and returning when it does. That sounds simple, but it rests entirely on the cookie surviving. When the cookie is cleared or expires, the same person comes back as new.

Why the default overstates "new"

Safari's 7-day cookie cap, private browsing, people switching devices and declined consent all wipe or prevent the cookie. Every one of those makes a genuine repeat customer look brand new, so GA4 typically overcounts new users and undercounts loyalty. Do not take the ratio at face value.

How to measure it properly

The order data in your shop is the real source of truth for loyalty; GA4 is the fast directional read.
