How to track YouTube embed video plays in GA4
If you embed YouTube videos, GA4 can track plays, how far people watch, and completions. It is built in, but it only works when the embed is set up the way GA4's video tracking expects.
The automatic video events
GA4's enhanced measurement includes video engagement. When it is on, GA4 fires video_start, video_progress (at 10, 25, 50, 75%) and video_complete events for embedded YouTube videos, with the title and percentage as parameters. Enable it in Admin, web data stream, Enhanced measurement.
The setting people miss
GA4 can only track the video if the embed uses the YouTube iframe player with the JavaScript API enabled. In practice that means the embed URL needs enablejsapi=1. Standard copy-paste embeds often include it, but custom or lazy-loaded embeds frequently do not, which is why video events silently never appear. Check the iframe src first.
Reporting and conversions
- Register the video title and percent parameters as custom dimensions to report by video.
- If a full watch matters, for a demo or VSL, mark
video_completeas a key event.
Note this covers YouTube embeds only. Self-hosted or Vimeo players need their own event setup through Google Tag Manager.
