Tracking basics

What is a view-through conversion?

A view-through conversion is credited when someone sees your ad, does not click it, and later converts anyway. It is the platforms' way of claiming credit for ads that were merely shown, and it is a big reason their reported numbers run high.

Click-through vs view-through

A click-through conversion is straightforward: the person clicked the ad, then converted. A view-through conversion counts the ad even though it was only displayed, on the theory that seeing it influenced the later purchase. Meta and display campaigns lean on view-through heavily.

Why it inflates numbers

View-through is generous by nature: it claims conversions that might have happened anyway. Combined with long attribution windows, it is why Meta tends to report more conversions than a click-only tool like GA4 last-click, and why summing platforms double-counts.

How to treat it in reporting

View-through is not fraud, it captures a real effect, but taken at face value it will overstate how much your ads directly drove.
