What is engagement rate in GA4 (and where bounce rate went)?
GA4 put engagement rate front and centre and demoted bounce rate, which threw everyone used to the old Analytics. The good news: once you know the definition, the two are simply opposite sides of the same coin.
The definition
Engagement rate is the percentage of sessions that were engaged sessions, that is, sessions lasting over 10 seconds, or with a conversion, or with 2+ page views. Bounce rate in GA4 is just 100% minus engagement rate, the share that met none of those.
Why GA4 switched
The old Universal Analytics bounce rate, a single-pageview visit, could be misleading: someone who read a long article for five minutes and left counted as a bounce. Engagement is a more honest "did this visit do anything meaningful" measure, which is why GA4 leads with it.
How to read it without being fooled
- Compare engagement rate between channels to judge traffic quality, high-engagement sources bring better visitors.
- Do not compare GA4 bounce rate to old Universal Analytics bounce rate; they are defined differently.
- If engagement swings to an extreme overnight, suspect a tracking bug, not behaviour, see bounce rate at 0% or 100%.
