Meta Pixel underreporting? The iOS gap, and how the Conversions API fixes it
Most stores running Meta ads are quietly underreporting. The Pixel fires in the browser, and a large share of buyers, especially on iOS and with ad blockers, never get counted. Meta then optimises and reports on a partial picture, so your real return looks worse than it is and your ads chase the wrong people.
Why the browser Pixel misses so much
The Meta Pixel runs in the visitor's browser. Apple's tracking prevention, ad blockers, and privacy browsers all limit or block it, and a big chunk of ecommerce traffic is now on iOS. Every blocked Pixel is a purchase Meta cannot see, so it under-credits your campaigns and optimises towards whoever it can still track.
What underreporting actually costs you
- Reported ROAS looks lower than the truth, so good campaigns get paused by mistake.
- Meta optimises delivery on a partial set of conversions, so it targets the wrong audiences.
- Retargeting and lookalike audiences are built from incomplete data, so they decay.
- Budget decisions are made on numbers that do not match your bank.

Check my tracking freeHow the Conversions API fixes it
The Conversions API, or CAPI, sends the same events from your server rather than only the browser. Because it does not depend on the visitor's browser or device, it recovers the iOS and ad-blocked buyers the Pixel misses. Set up properly, the Pixel and CAPI send the same event with a shared event ID so Meta deduplicates them, and each event carries hashed customer data so match quality climbs.
Deduplication is the part people get wrong
Running the Pixel and CAPI without deduplication doubles your conversions and makes the problem worse. The two must share an event ID and consistent parameters so Meta knows they are the same purchase. This is the single most common mistake we fix on Meta setups.
Event match quality is the score to watch
Meta grades each event on how much matchable customer data it carries. Higher match quality means more conversions attributed and better delivery. Sending email, phone and other parameters, hashed, lifts that score and directly improves performance.

Common questions
Is the Meta Pixel enough on its own?
No longer, if you run ads. iOS and ad blockers hide a large share of buyers from the browser Pixel, so a browser-only setup underreports and optimises on partial data. Pairing the Pixel with the Conversions API recovers those buyers.
Will CAPI double-count my conversions?
Only if it is set up without deduplication. Done properly, the Pixel and CAPI send a shared event ID so Meta treats them as one event. Deduplication is the step most botched setups miss.
What is event match quality?
It is Meta's score for how much matchable customer data each event carries, such as hashed email and phone. Higher match quality means more conversions attributed and better ad delivery.
