Cookie consent & GDPR

Free cookie consent check

Most sites get cookie consent wrong in one of two ways: their tracking fires before anyone opts in, or their cookie banner isn't actually wired to their tags, so accepting and declining do nothing. Both are a compliance risk, and both quietly distort your data. Run the free check and see where you stand in about 10 seconds.

Is your tracking firing before consent?

Pop in your URL. We'll read what loads on the page and flag whether tags look like they fire before opt-in, whether a consent banner is present, and whether Google Consent Mode is set up. Free, no signup.

Why cookie consent is so easy to get wrong

Under UK GDPR and PECR, non-essential cookies (analytics, ad pixels, remarketing) are only allowed after someone gives consent. In practice, a lot of setups drop those cookies the moment the page loads and show a banner as an afterthought, which means you're tracking people who never agreed. It's a genuine compliance exposure, and the ICO has been clear it's on their radar.

The flip side is just as common and costs you money: a banner that is shown but was never connected to Google Consent Mode. Google then never hears whether someone accepted or declined, so either your tags keep firing for people who said no, or you lose every conversion from people who said yes. Done properly, Consent Mode lets Google model the conversions you'd otherwise lose when people decline, so you stay compliant and keep most of your measured performance.

The three things we check

1. Do tags fire before opt-in?

If analytics or ad pixels load on the page with no consent gate in front of them, cookies are almost certainly being set before anyone agrees. That's the classic "cookies before consent" problem, and it's the one that carries real compliance risk.

2. Is there a consent banner at all?

No banner, or one that only appears in some regions, is a red flag if you have UK or EU visitors. We check whether a recognised consent platform is present, and the full audit confirms it inside your live setup.

3. Is Google Consent Mode actually wired up?

This is the one nearly everyone misses. Having a banner is not the same as feeding Google the accept and decline signals. Without Consent Mode v2, your banner and your tags are two things that don't talk to each other, so you're either non-compliant or throwing away recoverable conversions.
