Why your abandoned carts aren't being tracked
Abandoned carts are one of the most recoverable sources of revenue a store has, but only if you can see them. If the numbers look wrong or do not exist, the cause is almost always missing funnel events.
What abandoned-cart tracking depends on
You cannot measure abandonment without measuring the steps around it. It needs add_to_cart and begin_checkout firing reliably, so you can see who entered checkout and never reached purchase. Miss those events and abandonment is invisible or guessed.
Why it breaks
- begin_checkout not firing, so there is no checkout entry to compare against. See funnel drop-off.
- Hosted checkout where mid-funnel events happen off your measured pages. See Shopify checkout gap.
- Email tool and GA4 disagreeing because they define "abandoned" differently.
How to fix it
Get the full ecommerce funnel firing with proper item data, then abandonment falls out of the gap between begin_checkout and purchase, cleanly and consistently. That is also what lets your recovery emails and ads target the right people.
