Shopify sales not showing in GA4 (the checkout gap)
Orders are landing in Shopify, but GA4's purchase count is a fraction of them, or zero. This is one of the most common and most expensive tracking faults there is, and it is almost always the checkout, not GA4.
Why Shopify checkouts are a blind spot
On Shopify, the checkout has historically run on Shopify's own domain and was locked down, so a normal GA4 tag placed on your theme never reached the purchase step. The thank-you page either did not run your tags or only did on specific plans. Result: GA4 sees people start buying and never finish.
The current right way
- Use Shopify's Google & YouTube channel or Customer Events (Web Pixels) to fire GA4 purchase events, rather than hacking the theme.
- On Plus, configure tracking through checkout extensibility, since the old
checkout.liquidand additional scripts are being retired. - Confirm the purchase event carries value, currency, transaction_id and items, not just a bare "purchase".
The cost of leaving it
Missing purchases do not just dent reporting. Google Ads and Meta optimise on the conversions they receive, so a checkout that does not report trains your ads to chase clicks, not buyers. If your store's GA4 revenue looks nothing like Shopify's, start here, then reconcile with GA4 revenue vs Shopify payouts. A free check flags a missing purchase tag immediately.
