Why your phone-call conversions aren't being recorded
If the phone is how customers reach you, and those calls are not tracked, a huge share of your real conversions are invisible, and your ads are optimising only toward the ones that happen to fill in a form.
Why calls slip through
- A tel: link click is not a call: tracking the click counts intent, not a connected call.
- Offline calls (someone dials the number from your site) never touch your analytics at all.
- No call-tracking system, so there is nothing to attribute the call to a visit or ad.
How to fix it
Use call tracking that swaps in a dynamic number per visitor, so a connected call can be tied back to the session, keyword or campaign, then imported as a conversion into GA4 and Google Ads. For a quick proxy, track tel: clicks as a soft conversion while you set up proper call tracking. Calls are often the highest-value conversions a service business has, so leaving them untracked distorts everything. See how calls fit the wider picture in offline conversion imports.
