Offline conversion imports: connecting your CRM to Google and Meta
For lead generation and considered purchases, the conversion that matters, a qualified lead, a signed deal, an enrolment, happens days later in your CRM, not on the website. If your ad platforms only see the form submit, they optimise for the wrong thing. Offline conversion imports fix that. Here is how.
Why website conversions aren’t enough
A form fill is not a customer. If Google and Meta only know that someone submitted a form, they will chase more form fills, including the junk ones. What you actually want them to optimise for is the qualified lead or the closed deal, and only your CRM knows which leads became those. Offline conversion imports send that outcome back so the platforms learn from real results.
How it works
When someone clicks an ad, the click ID (GCLID for Google, or click/lead identifiers for Meta) is captured and stored with the lead, often in a hidden form field, so it travels into your CRM. Later, when that lead becomes qualified or closes, you send the outcome plus the stored click ID back to Google or Meta, which ties the real result to the original ad click.
What the setup needs
- Capture the click ID at the point of enquiry (hidden field into the form/CRM).
- Store it against the lead record in your CRM.
- Send the outcome back (lead qualified, sale, value) with that ID, via upload, a connector, or an API/automation.
- Use enhanced conversions for leads (hashed email match) where a click ID isn’t available.

Once real outcomes flow back, smart bidding can optimise for revenue and qualified leads instead of raw form fills, you can see which campaigns actually produce customers (not just enquiries), and your cost-per-acquisition finally reflects business reality. For considered-purchase and education-style funnels, this is the difference between ads that look busy and ads that actually pay.
The catch
It only works if the click ID is captured and preserved from the very first touch, which loops back to clean tagging and landing pages that don’t strip parameters. Offline imports are the last mile of a well-built attribution chain, not a shortcut around a broken one.

Offline conversion imports: common questions
What are offline conversion imports?
They send real outcomes from your CRM, such as a qualified lead or a closed deal, back to Google or Meta, tied to the original ad click. That lets the ad platforms optimise for customers rather than just form fills.
How does Google match an offline conversion to a click?
Usually via the GCLID, which is captured when the person clicks the ad, stored with the lead in your CRM, and sent back with the outcome. Where no click ID is available, enhanced conversions for leads can match on hashed email instead.
Do I need offline conversion tracking for ecommerce?
Less so, because the sale happens on the website. It matters most for lead generation and considered purchases, where the real conversion happens later in your CRM rather than at the point of enquiry.
