Why your conversions suddenly doubled overnight
If your conversions doubled from one day to the next with no matching jump in actual sales, it is a tracking change, not a windfall. Something is now firing the conversion twice, and it usually traces to a recent edit.
What causes an overnight double
- A duplicate tag: a second GA4 or conversion tag was added, so every conversion fires twice. See duplicate GA4 tags.
- Hardcoded plus GTM: someone added a pixel in the theme while it was already in GTM.
- Both pixel and server event with no dedup: a CAPI or server event without a shared ID, as in duplicate CAPI events.
- A trigger change that now fires on more than the confirmation page.
How to confirm it
Check the date the jump started and line it up with your deploy or tag-change history. Use GTM Preview or GA4 DebugView to watch a single test conversion: if the event fires twice, you have found it.
How to fix it
Remove the duplicate source so the conversion fires exactly once, on the real confirmation page, and add proper deduplication for any pixel-plus-server setup. The same logic covers duplicate conversions in general. Fix it quickly: inflated conversions do not just mislead you, they teach your ad platforms to optimise toward phantom results.
