Cookie banner causing layout shift or flicker? Fix the CLS
If your cookie banner flashes in a moment after the page loads and shoves your content down, that is Cumulative Layout Shift, one of Google's Core Web Vitals. It looks janky to visitors and counts against you in page-experience scoring.
Why it shifts and flickers
The banner's script loads after your initial content, so the page renders first, then the banner appears and reflows everything around it. On some tools you also get a flash where the banner shows, disappears, and reshows while it checks stored consent, which is the flicker.
How to stop the shift
- Render the banner as a fixed overlay at the bottom or in a corner, not as an element that pushes page content down.
- Reserve its space, or use a position that floats over content rather than inside the flow.
- Make sure it reads stored consent before painting, so a returning visitor who already chose never sees it flash again. If it keeps reappearing, that is a consent-not-remembered problem.
Why it is worth fixing
Layout shift is both a visitor annoyance and a ranking signal, and it often travels with a page-speed problem from the same heavy script. A well-built banner can be fully compliant and cause zero shift; the two are not in conflict. If yours is hard to tame, it may be worth switching to a lighter tool.
