Why your GA4 product (item) data is missing
You can see sales in GA4, but the ecommerce reports have no product names, no categories, no quantities, just totals. The items detail is the most useful part of ecommerce tracking, and it is also the easiest to lose.
Why items go missing
- No items array on the event: the purchase was sent with a value but no product list.
- Wrong parameter structure: GA4 expects a specific
itemsformat; a near-miss is ignored. - A data layer gap: the site never published the product details for the tag to read.
- Items only on some events (purchase but not add_to_cart), breaking the funnel.
What it costs you
No product-level performance, no best-seller or problem-product insight, and weaker feeds for shopping ads. You are flying the store on totals alone.
The fix
Send a correctly structured items array (id, name, category, price, quantity) on every ecommerce event, from real product data, and verify it in DebugView. This is a data layer job, and a core part of a proper ecommerce tracking audit.
