Google Ads conversion tracking through GTM, set up properly
Running Google Ads conversion tracking through Google Tag Manager keeps your tags in one place and lets you send accurate order values. It only works reliably if three pieces are set up together.
The three pieces you need
- Conversion Linker tag: fires on all pages and stores the ad click ID in a first-party cookie. Without it, conversions lose attribution. This is the single most-missed step.
- Conversion Tracking tag: fires on the confirmation page with your conversion ID and label.
- A clean data layer: so the tag can read the real order value and transaction ID rather than scraping the page.
Send dynamic values, not a fixed number
Pull the order value and currency from the data layer into the conversion tag, and pass the transaction ID so Google can deduplicate. A hardcoded value means every sale looks the same size and your value-based bidding runs blind. A missing purchase value is a common symptom of this.
Avoid duplicate conversions
Make sure the conversion tag fires only once, on the real confirmation page, and that you are not also running a hardcoded gtag for the same action elsewhere. Two sources for one conversion is the usual cause of double-counted conversions. Test in GTM Preview and Google Ads' diagnostics before going live. For stronger match rates, layer enhanced conversions on top.
