Enhanced conversions for Google Ads, explained

Enhanced conversions are one of the highest-return, lowest-effort improvements you can make to Google Ads measurement. They quietly recover conversions that cookies miss, and they are a prerequisite for getting the most out of smart bidding. Here is how they work and how to set them up safely.

The problem they solve

Browser cookies are increasingly blocked and short-lived, so a growing share of real conversions can’t be matched back to the ad click. Enhanced conversions fill that gap by using the first-party data a customer already gives you, their email, say, at checkout or on a form, to match the conversion to the Google account that clicked the ad.

How they work (and the privacy bit)

When a conversion happens, the customer’s email (and optionally name, phone, address) is hashed in the browser using SHA-256 before it is sent, so Google never receives the raw details. Google matches that hash against signed-in users to confirm and recover the conversion. It is privacy-safe when set up correctly, and it materially increases measured conversions.

Why it matters for bidding

Smart bidding is only as good as the conversion data it learns from. By recovering conversions that would otherwise be invisible, enhanced conversions give Google a fuller, more accurate picture, so automated bidding finds more of the right buyers. It is not just a reporting nicety; it improves performance.

Getting it right and legal

The main things to get right: only send data users have consented to; make sure the hashing happens correctly (never send raw emails); confirm the fields map to the right variables; and verify in Google Ads that enhanced conversions are recording. A botched setup either sends nothing useful or, worse, sends unhashed data.

Enhanced conversions: common questions

What are enhanced conversions in Google Ads?

They recover conversions that cookies miss by matching hashed first-party data, such as a customer’s email given at checkout, back to the Google account that clicked the ad. This increases measured conversions without sending Google any raw personal data.

Are enhanced conversions GDPR-safe?

They can be, when set up correctly. Customer data is hashed with SHA-256 in the browser before it’s sent, so Google never receives raw details, and you should only send data for users who have consented. A bad setup that sends unhashed data is the risk to avoid.

Do enhanced conversions improve ad performance?

Yes, indirectly. By recovering conversions that would otherwise be invisible, they give smart bidding a fuller and more accurate dataset to learn from, which helps it find more of the right buyers.
