Shopify killed checkout.liquid: what it breaks in your tracking
Shopify is retiring the old customisable checkout, checkout.liquid and the "Additional scripts" box, in favour of checkout extensibility. For a lot of stores that quietly removes the exact place their conversion tracking lived.
What is actually changing
For years, stores pasted GA4, Google Ads and Meta conversion snippets into Shopify's Additional scripts field on the order-status page, or edited checkout.liquid directly. Shopify is removing both. Anything that relied on them stops firing, and the purchase, the single most valuable event, goes with it.
What breaks if you do nothing
- GA4 purchase events vanish from the checkout.
- Google Ads and Meta conversion tags on the order page stop reporting, so your ad optimisation degrades.
- Any custom data-layer pushes you added by hand disappear.
How to migrate
Move tracking to Shopify's supported routes: Customer Events (Web Pixels) for custom pixels, the native Google & YouTube and Meta channels for the big platforms, and server-side where accuracy matters. Done properly, it is more robust than the old scripts, and survives iOS and consent far better. Done late, or half-migrated, you get a silent gap in exactly your most important event. This is a textbook case for an audit before the deadline, not after.
