Why your subscription renewals don't show in tracking
For a subscription business, the first order is the smallest part of the value. Yet most setups track that initial purchase on the website and go blind the moment renewals start billing, which hides the number that actually matters: lifetime value.
Why renewals vanish
The initial sale happens in the browser, where your tags live. Renewals are billed later by Stripe, Shopify or a subscription app, server-side, with no browser session, so nothing on your site ever sees them. Your tracking simply was not told.
What that distorts
- Revenue looks far lower than reality, because only first orders count.
- Ad platforms optimise on first-purchase value, not lifetime value, so they may undervalue your best customers.
- Churn and renewal rates are invisible in your analytics.
How to capture it
Send renewal and churn events server-side from your billing system (with the subscription ID and value) into GA4 and, where useful, your ad platforms. Then you can measure true LTV and let bidding optimise for it. This is advanced, reliable-by-design tracking, and a natural fit for an audit and build.
