How to track a multi-step form in GA4 without a thank-you page
Multi-step forms usually submit with JavaScript and show a success message in place, never loading a new thank-you URL. GA4's old trick of counting a thank-you pageview does not work, so you track events instead.
Why the thank-you page method fails
Traditional conversion tracking watched for a /thank-you pageview. Modern forms, especially multi-step ones, submit via AJAX and never change the URL, so that pageview never fires. This is the same root cause behind many form submissions not tracking and thank-you pages not firing.
Track the steps and the completion as events
- Fire a
form_stepevent as the visitor reaches each step, with a step-number parameter. - Fire a
form_submitorgenerate_leadevent on real success, ideally off a success signal in the data layer, not just a button click.
Do all of this in Google Tag Manager so you are not editing site code for every change.
Why the step events are worth it
Tracking each step shows you exactly where people abandon, so you can fix the step that is bleeding leads rather than guessing. Mark the final form_submit as a key event so it counts as a conversion. Fire it on genuine success only, or you will count failed and validation-error submissions as leads.
