What is first-party data (and why it matters now)?
First-party data is the information you collect directly from your own customers and visitors, with their consent, on your own properties. As third-party cookies disappear, it is becoming the most valuable and durable data a business can own.
First-party vs third-party
First-party data comes straight from your relationship with the customer: purchases, email signups, account details, on-site behaviour. Third-party data is collected by someone else (ad networks) and bought or shared, and it is exactly what third-party cookies powered, the thing browsers are switching off.
Why it matters now
- It survives the cookie purge: it does not depend on third-party cookies, so it keeps working as they vanish.
- It powers durable audiences for ads (customer-list targeting) without relying on tracking people across the web.
- It is more accurate and more compliant, because you collected it directly with consent.
How to build on it
Capture consented first-party signals well, email, purchase history, a first-party ID, and feed them back to your ad platforms through offline conversion imports and server-side tracking. The businesses that invest in first-party data now are the ones whose measurement and targeting still work once third-party cookies are gone.
