What is marketing attribution?
Marketing attribution is how you decide which of your marketing touches gets credit when someone converts. Most customers see several things, an ad, a search, an email, before buying, and attribution is the rule for sharing the credit between them.
Why it is not obvious
A single sale might involve a Meta ad, a Google search a week later, and an email the day of purchase. Who gets the credit? Attribution is the model that answers that, and the answer directly shapes where you think your budget should go.
The main models
- Last click: all credit to the final touch. Simple, but ignores everything that warmed the customer up.
- First click: all credit to the first touch. The opposite bias.
- Linear / time decay / position-based: spread credit across touches in different ways.
- Data-driven: GA4's default, which uses your data to assign fractional credit.
See first-click vs last-click for the two extremes.
Why no model is "the truth"
Every model is a different lens on the same journey, and each flatters different channels, which is exactly why ROAS differs on every platform. The useful mindset is to pick a consistent model, understand its bias, and judge trends within it, rather than hunting for one perfectly true number. And all of it rests on accurate conversion tracking underneath.
