What is conversion tracking?
Conversion tracking is the system that tells your ad platforms which clicks actually led to something valuable, a sale, a lead, a booking, so they can optimise toward the right outcome.
How it works
When someone completes a key action, a pixel or tag fires on the confirmation page and reports it back to the platform, matched to the click that brought them in. Google Ads, Meta and the rest then know that this campaign, ad and keyword produced a real result, not just a click.
Why it matters more than almost anything
Modern ad platforms optimise automatically toward the conversions you report. Feed them accurate data and they find more of your best customers. Feed them broken or missing data and they optimise toward nothing useful, quietly wasting budget. Good conversion tracking is the single biggest lever most advertisers are not pulling.
What usually goes wrong
- Missing: the tag is not on the confirmation page, so real sales are invisible.
- Double counting: the tag fires more than once, inflating results. See fixing duplicate conversions.
- Mismatched: GA4, Google Ads and your shop all report different totals.
If the platforms disagree with your actual orders, your optimisation is running on bad numbers.
