GA4 not recording purchases? The usual causes, and how to fix them
GA4 happily tracks pageviews, so the account looks healthy, but the numbers that matter, purchases and revenue, are missing or far below your real sales. When that happens your reports are decorative and any decision made from them is a guess. Here is what usually causes it.
The usual causes, in order of likelihood
1. No purchase event reaching GA4
The purchase event either never fires, fires on the wrong page, or fires but is not wired into GA4 through your tag manager. Sessions look fine because pageviews are automatic, but the conversion never arrives.
2. The data layer is missing or malformed
GA4 ecommerce depends on a data layer that provides the transaction ID, value, currency and items. If that data layer is absent, incomplete, or uses the wrong structure, the event may fire but arrive empty, so revenue shows as zero or items never populate.
3. No transaction ID, so purchases dedupe away
Without a unique transaction ID, GA4 cannot tell repeat fires apart and may collapse or miscount purchases. A missing or reused transaction ID quietly distorts your totals.
4. Consent mode blocking the tag
In the UK and EU, if consent is not wired to GA4, the tag is blocked for anyone who does not accept the banner. That can remove a large slice of measured purchases before they are ever counted.
5. Filtering, or the wrong data stream
Internal traffic filters, a misconfigured data stream, or a key event not marked as a conversion can all hide purchases that are technically arriving. Worth ruling out before assuming the tag is broken.

A clean GA4 ecommerce setup fires one purchase event with a unique transaction ID, correct value and currency, and a full items array, wired through your tag manager and gated by a properly configured consent mode. When that is right, GA4 lands within a few percent of your store's own revenue and stays there.

Common questions
Why does GA4 show sessions but no purchases?
Pageviews are automatic, so sessions always look fine, but the purchase event is a separate thing that has to be built and wired in. If it is missing, misfiring, or blocked by consent, you get traffic with no conversions.
Why is my GA4 revenue lower than my store?
Usually consent blocking, a missing transaction ID, or an incomplete data layer dropping value data. A clean, deduplicated purchase event with full value data closes most of the gap.
How close should GA4 and my store revenue be?
With a clean setup, within a few percent. Larger persistent gaps almost always point to a tracking fault rather than normal variance.
