GA4 shows no conversions? Here's how to find and fix it
You are making sales, but GA4 says zero conversions, or the conversion report is stubbornly empty. Nine times out of ten it is one of a handful of specific causes. Work through these checks in order and you will find it.
Start here: are you looking in the right place?
Before assuming tracking is broken, rule out the boring reasons. GA4 standard reports lag by 24 to 48 hours, so a sale from an hour ago will not be there yet. Check Realtime or DebugView for anything recent. Also confirm your date range and that you are looking at the right property, not a second one someone created by accident. If Realtime is also empty while you browse your own site, the problem is real. Read on.
The 8 checks, in order
1. You are testing with cookies declined
This is the most common one by far. If you declined your own cookie banner, or you have an ad blocker or privacy browser, GA4 runs cookieless or does not fire at all, so you personally see nothing even though real visitors are tracked fine. Test in a clean browser with no blocker and accept the banner. If the data appears, tracking was never broken.
2. The event fires, but it is not marked as a Key event
In GA4, an event only counts as a conversion once you toggle it as a Key event under Admin. Your purchase or lead event can be arriving perfectly while the conversions report stays empty simply because nobody flipped that switch. Check Admin, then Key events.
3. The tag never fires (GTM gap)
If you use Google Tag Manager, a purchase or lead only reaches GA4 if the container has a GA4 Event tag on a matching trigger. Page views work out of the box, so the site looks tracked, but custom conversions silently go nowhere. Open GTM Preview, complete the action, and confirm the tag actually fires.
4. The event name does not match
GA4 is case sensitive and exact. If your site pushes Purchase but your tag or key event expects purchase, they never connect. A single typo or capital letter is enough to make a conversion vanish. Compare the exact string in your data layer, your tag, and your key event list.
5. Consent Mode is blocking the tag entirely
A cookie banner without Consent Mode set up correctly can block tags outright instead of throttling them. In the EU and UK that can zero out a big share of measured conversions the moment someone ignores the banner. Consent Mode should downgrade to modelling, not switch tracking off.
6. Data filters or internal traffic rules are hiding it
An internal traffic filter, a developer traffic filter, or a bot exclusion can quietly remove the exact sessions you are testing from. If you set one up and then test from the office IP, you filter yourself out. Check Admin, then Data filters.
7. Data thresholds are hiding low numbers
When volumes are small and Google Signals is on, GA4 sometimes withholds rows to protect user identity, showing a threshold icon and a blank where the number should be. This looks like missing conversions but is a privacy safeguard. It resolves as volume grows.
8. The purchase value or transaction ID is missing
The event might be firing but arriving with no value or a duplicate transaction ID, so revenue reads as zero or orders collapse into one. Inspect a real purchase event and confirm it carries a value, a currency, and a unique transaction_id.

Check my tracking freeStill stuck?
If you have worked through all eight and conversions still are not landing, the problem is usually deeper in the tag setup: a broken data layer, a consent race condition, or events firing before the GA4 config loads. That is exactly the kind of thing an audit is for. We look at your live tags, tell you which of these is hitting you, and give you a fixed quote to fix it.
