Conversions dropped suddenly? How to find the cause fast
When conversions fall off a cliff overnight, the first question isn’t 'what happened to demand', it’s 'what changed in the tracking'. A genuine demand drop is gradual; a sudden one is almost always a measurement break. Here’s how to find it fast.
Step one: find the exact date it dropped
Pull a daily conversion chart and find the precise day the drop started. This single step does most of the work, because almost every tracking break lines up with a change made on or around that date. A sharp cliff on one day is a break; a gentle slope is more likely real.
Step two: what changed on that date
- A website deploy or redesign that removed the tag, changed the thank-you page, or altered the dataLayer.
- A new or changed cookie banner that now blocks tags.
- A GTM change published, or a tag accidentally paused or deleted.
- A GA4 or Ads change: a key event toggled off, a conversion action edited, a goal renamed.
- A platform or plugin update on Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix and the like.

Check my tracking freeStep three: confirm it’s tracking, not sales
Cross-check against a source that doesn’t depend on the broken tracking: your actual orders in Shopify or WooCommerce, your payment processor, your inbox of leads. If real sales held steady while tracked conversions dropped, it’s a measurement break. If real sales dropped too, that’s a different, business problem.
Step four: fix and backfill where you can
Once you find the break, fixing it restores tracking going forward. Some platforms let you import or reconcile the missed conversions (offline imports for Google Ads, for example) so the gap doesn’t distort your reporting and bidding for months. Speed matters here, because while tracking is broken, smart bidding is learning from bad data.

Sudden conversion drop: common questions
Why did my conversions suddenly drop to zero?
A sudden drop is almost always a tracking break, not a demand collapse: a site deploy that removed the tag, a new cookie banner blocking it, a GTM change, or a conversion action toggled off. Find the exact date it dropped and look at what changed then.
How do I know if it's a tracking issue or a real sales drop?
Cross-check against something that doesn’t rely on the tracking, your actual orders, payment processor, or leads. If real sales held steady but tracked conversions fell, it’s a measurement break.
Can I recover conversions missed while tracking was broken?
Sometimes. For Google Ads, offline conversion imports can backfill missed conversions from your records, which limits the damage to reporting and bidding. Fixing it quickly matters because bidding learns from the bad data.
