How to exclude existing customers from retargeting
If your retargeting keeps chasing people who already bought, you are paying to advertise to customers who do not need the ad, and irritating them. Excluding existing customers is a quick win that sharpens both spend and experience.
Why it matters
Retargeting budget should go to people still deciding, not those who already converted. Without an exclusion, buyers keep seeing "come back and buy" ads for a product they own, wasting impressions and looking careless. It is one of the most common retargeting leaks.
How to build the exclusion
- Purchaser audience: build an audience of people who fired the purchase event (or reached the confirmation page) and exclude it from prospecting and retargeting.
- Customer list: upload a first-party customer list and exclude it, which also survives cookie loss.
- GA4 audience: create a "purchasers" GA4 audience and exclude it in Google Ads.
Nuance: not always a full exclude
For repeat-purchase businesses (consumables, subscriptions) you may want to re-target past buyers deliberately, just with a different message and timing, not the same "first purchase" ad. The goal is relevance: stop showing acquisition ads to people past that stage. Consent still applies, excluded or targeted, audiences only include consented users.
