Troubleshooting

Meta pixel not firing? How to diagnose and fix it

If your Meta pixel isn’t firing, Facebook and Instagram ads are optimising half-blind and your reported results are understated. The good news: it’s usually quick to diagnose. Here’s how.

Confirm it first

Install the Meta Pixel Helper browser extension and load your site. It tells you whether the pixel is present, which events fire, and any errors. This takes the guesswork out, you’ll see immediately whether the pixel is missing entirely, firing with errors, or not firing on specific pages like the purchase confirmation.

How to fix it

Make sure the base pixel loads site-wide and the key events (Purchase, Lead) fire where they should, with the right ID. Wire consent so the pixel respects choices without being blocked outright for everyone. Then, to recover the ad-blocked and iOS users the browser pixel can never see, add the Conversions API alongside it with proper deduplication so you don’t double count.

Why bother getting it right

Meta’s optimisation only learns from the conversions it receives. A pixel that misfires doesn’t just under-report, it actively makes your ads perform worse, because the algorithm is finding people based on incomplete data. Fixing it usually improves results, not just reporting.

Meta pixel not firing: common questions

How do I check if my Meta pixel is firing?

Install the Meta Pixel Helper browser extension and load your site. It shows whether the pixel is present, which events fire, and any errors, including whether it fires on key pages like the purchase confirmation.

Why is my Meta pixel not firing on the checkout?

Often the pixel isn’t installed on the checkout or thank-you pages, a cookie banner is blocking it, or single-page navigation isn’t re-firing it. Less often the wrong pixel ID is in place.

Can ad-blockers stop my Meta pixel?

Yes, ad-blockers block browser pixels for a meaningful share of users. The Conversions API, which sends events from your server, is how you recover those alongside the pixel.
