Troubleshooting

GA4 Realtime works but reports are empty the next day

It’s a confusing one: you see yourself in GA4 Realtime, so tracking clearly works, yet the next day the standard reports show nothing. There are a few reasons, and most are not the disaster they feel like.

1. A data filter is excluding the traffic

The most common cause. If you have an internal traffic filter or a developer traffic filter set to Active, GA4 shows the traffic in Realtime but excludes it from the processed reports. If you’re testing from your own office IP or a flagged environment, that’s often why you vanish by the next day. Check Admin, Data Settings, Data Filters.

2. You’re looking at the wrong thing

3. Thresholding is hiding it

When volumes are low and Google signals are on, GA4 applies data thresholding to protect anonymity, which can suppress rows in reports even though the data was collected. More traffic, or adjusting reporting identity, usually reveals it. This is a reporting behaviour, not lost data.

4. Processing and genuine faults

Standard reports aren’t truly real-time, so a few hours’ delay is normal, but a full day with nothing is not just processing. If it isn’t a filter, the wrong view, or thresholding, then check that a misconfiguration isn’t stopping events being processed, or that data retention settings haven’t wiped older data you’re looking for. At that point it’s worth a proper look rather than more guessing.

Realtime vs reports: common questions

Why does GA4 show data in Realtime but not in reports the next day?

Most often a data filter (internal or developer traffic) is excluding the traffic from processed reports, or you’re looking at the wrong property, date range or a thresholded report. Genuine processing takes hours, not a full day.

What is data thresholding in GA4?

When volumes are low and Google signals are enabled, GA4 withholds some rows in reports to protect anonymity. The data was collected; it’s just hidden in that view until there’s more volume or you adjust reporting identity.

Is a few hours' delay in GA4 reports normal?

Yes. Standard reports are processed, not real-time, so a few hours’ lag is expected. A full day with no data when Realtime works points to a filter, the wrong view, thresholding, or a processing fault.
