Troubleshooting

Why is my GA4 traffic so low?

If GA4 is reporting far fewer visitors than feels right, it is usually one of a handful of causes, and most are quick to check. Here they are, roughly in order of likelihood.

1. A cookie banner is blocking the tag

The most common cause by far. If your consent banner holds GA4 back until someone clicks Accept, every visitor who ignores or declines it is invisible. On many sites that is 20 to 40 percent of traffic, gone. This is the first thing to rule out, especially if the drop started when a banner went live.

2. The tag isn’t on every page

GA4 only counts pages where the tag actually loads. A section of the site, a subdomain, a landing-page builder or a separate checkout can easily be missing the tag, so whole swathes of traffic never register.

3. Filters, settings and the wrong stream

4. The tag is misconfigured or broke recently

A wrong measurement ID, a GTM container that isn’t published, or a site change that removed the snippet will all starve GA4 of data. If traffic dropped off a cliff on a specific date, line that date up with any site or tag change, that is almost always the culprit.

How to pin it down fast

Open GA4 Realtime and load your own site in a normal browser and an incognito one, with and without accepting cookies. If you only appear when you accept, it is consent. If you never appear on certain pages, it is a missing tag. If you never appear at all, it is the ID or an unpublished container.

Low GA4 traffic: common questions

Why is my GA4 showing so few visitors?

Most often a cookie banner is blocking the tag for everyone who doesn’t accept, or the tag is missing from some pages. Filters, the wrong data stream, or a recent tag change are the other common causes.

Can a cookie banner make GA4 traffic look low?

Yes, very commonly. If the banner blocks GA4 until a visitor accepts, everyone who ignores or declines it goes uncounted, which can be 20 to 40 percent of traffic.

How do I check why GA4 traffic is low?

Use GA4 Realtime while loading your own site in a normal and an incognito window, with and without accepting cookies. Whether and when you appear tells you if it’s consent, a missing tag, or a configuration problem.
