How to track phone-number (tel:) clicks as conversions in GA4
If your site shows a clickable phone number, every tap on mobile is a strong lead signal. GA4 will not track it on its own, but a quick Google Tag Manager setup turns those taps into countable conversions.
Set up the click event in GTM
- In Google Tag Manager, create a Click trigger that fires when the clicked link URL starts with
tel:. - Add a GA4 event tag, for example
phone_click, firing on that trigger. - Optionally send the number as a parameter if you show more than one.
Count it as a conversion
In GA4, mark phone_click as a key event so it appears as a conversion and can be imported into Google Ads. For a service business this is often the most important action on the site, so it deserves to be a real conversion.
The honest limit
A tap is not a completed call. It tells you someone intended to call, not that they connected or that it was a good lead. For true call outcomes you need call tracking that records connected and qualified calls, which is a different tool, covered in why call-tracking conversions are not recording. Click tracking is still worth having as a fast, free intent signal.
