Cookies explained

What happens if you don't accept cookies?

For almost every website, declining cookies changes very little that you would actually notice. The essential parts still work. Here is exactly what happens when you say no, and the few cases where it matters.

The short version

When you decline non-essential cookies, the site stops setting its analytics and advertising cookies for your visit, but the essential cookies that make it function still load. You can browse, log in, add to a basket and check out as normal. Nothing breaks.

The rare exceptions

A few sites lean on non-essential cookies for features they probably should treat as essential, so declining can log you out faster or reset a preference. And some sites use a "consent or pay" model, mostly large publishers, where you either accept tracking or pay to browse. Those are the exception, not the norm.

If you run a website, this is the number you’re missing

Every declined visit is a real person your analytics never counted and your ad platforms never learned from. That is why a cookie banner can make your traffic look like it fell off a cliff. The fix is not to remove the banner, it is to measure the declined visits anonymously so you are not flying blind.

Recover the data from declined visits, legally

We set up Consent Mode so declined visitors are still modelled, not lost. The audit comes off any build.

Declining cookies: common questions

Will a website still work if I don't accept cookies?

Yes. Essential cookies that make the site function still load, so you can browse, log in and buy. You only lose some personalisation and the site’s analytics or advertising cookies for your visit.

Why does the cookie banner keep reappearing when I decline?

Usually because the site stores your choice in a cookie that is itself blocked, or its consent tool is misconfigured. It is a fault in the site’s setup, not something you did wrong.

Can a website refuse to let me in if I decline cookies?

Most cannot and do not. A few large publishers use a 'consent or pay' model where you accept tracking or pay to browse, but that is the exception rather than the rule.
