What is Enhanced Measurement in GA4?
Enhanced Measurement is a GA4 setting that automatically tracks a set of common interactions without any tagging, scrolls, outbound clicks, downloads, site searches and video. It is a great head start, as long as you know what it does and does not cover.
What it captures automatically
- Page views, and scrolls (at 90% depth, see scroll depth).
- Outbound clicks and file downloads.
- Site search, form interactions, and YouTube video engagement.
Its limits
It only covers these standard interactions in standard ways. A custom action, a quote request, a multi-step form, a booking, needs its own event through GTM. And the automatic events are coarse: the single 90% scroll, or outbound clicks only on true cross-domain links.
When to turn parts off
Occasionally Enhanced Measurement double-counts alongside a custom tag doing the same job, or its site-search detection misfires on your URL structure. If you see duplicate scroll or search events, turn off the overlapping Enhanced Measurement toggle in Admin, data stream, rather than fighting it. Otherwise, leave it on, it is free, useful data.
