Why GA4 and Google Ads conversion numbers never quite match
A gap between GA4 and Google Ads conversion counts sends a lot of people into a panic. Some of that gap is completely normal and expected. Some of it is a real fault worth fixing. The trick is knowing which is which so you do not chase a problem that is not there, or ignore one that is.
Why they never match exactly
Different attribution models
GA4 and Google Ads can credit conversions differently and to different moments in the journey. Even with the same underlying sales, the way each tool assigns credit produces different totals.
Different time windows
Google Ads counts a conversion against the date of the click, while GA4 counts it against the date it happened. Around the edges of a date range, that alone creates a gap that means nothing is wrong.
Conversion counting settings
Google Ads can be set to count every conversion or only one per click, and which conversion actions are included is configurable. GA4 key events are counted differently again. These settings alone explain a lot of the difference.
When the gap is a real fault
A modest, stable gap is normal. Worry when the gap is large, growing, or when one platform is far below your actual sales. That usually points to one of these:
- Consent blocking one platform's tags more than the other.
- Enhanced conversions off in Google Ads, so it under-credits.
- A purchase event firing twice into one tool but not the other.
- A missing transaction ID causing miscounts.

Do not expect GA4 and Google Ads to match to the number, they never will. Do expect each of them to land within a sensible range of your real sales, and to move together when your sales move. If one drifts far from reality, or the gap keeps widening, that is your signal to get the setup checked.

Common questions
How big a gap between GA4 and Google Ads is normal?
There is no single number, but a modest and stable gap is expected because of attribution and timing differences. A large or growing gap, or either platform sitting well below your real sales, points to a fault.
Which should I trust, GA4 or Google Ads?
Neither in isolation. Use your store or bank as the source of truth for actual revenue, then expect GA4 and Google Ads each to sit within a sensible range of it. If one does not, that is the one to investigate.
Can I make them match exactly?
No, and you should not try. They measure and attribute differently by design. The goal is accuracy against reality and consistency over time, not identical numbers.
