Google Ads conversions not tracking? Here is why, and how to fix it
When Google Ads stops counting conversions, or counts a fraction of the sales you know happened, the algorithm starts bidding blind. It cannot optimise towards conversions it cannot see, so your cost per acquisition drifts up while the real picture stays hidden. The good news: the cause is almost always one of a short list, and each one is fixable.
First, check it is actually a tracking problem
Before assuming the worst, confirm the sales are real and recent, and that you are looking at the right conversion action and date range. A surprising number of panics are a filtered view or a conversion action set to a long window. Once you are sure real orders are not showing, work down the list below.
The six usual causes
1. The conversion tag was never firing, or stopped
The Google Ads conversion tag, or the GA4 conversion imported into Ads, is missing from the page, paused in Google Tag Manager, or blocked by a recent site change. This is the most common cause and the easiest to miss, because everything else looks normal.
2. Conversions are recording, but through the wrong source
Sometimes purchases record via one tag while a second, better tag (with enhanced conversions or full value data) sits paused. Ads still shows conversions, but without the value and match data it needs to bid well. It looks like it is working while quietly underperforming.
3. Enhanced conversions are off
Enhanced conversions send hashed first-party data (like a customer email) so Google can match more conversions accurately, especially on iOS and across devices. With them off, you lose a slice of conversions and match quality that the platform would otherwise credit to your ads.
4. Consent mode is blocking the tag
In the UK and EU, if consent is not wired to your tags properly, the conversion tag gets blocked outright rather than downgraded to modelling. Every visitor who ignores or declines the banner then vanishes from your conversion count.
5. No begin_checkout or funnel events
If only the final purchase fires and the steps before it do not, smart bidding has far less to learn from. Missing begin_checkout and add_to_cart events starve the algorithm of the signals that make automated bidding work.
6. The base Google tag is missing
Enhanced conversions and cross-domain measurement rely on the base Google tag being present site-wide. Without it, conversion actions can misfire or record partial data even when the conversion tag itself looks fine.

A clean Google Ads setup sends one correct conversion, with the right value and a transaction ID, with enhanced conversions on, and with consent mode wired so declined visitors are modelled rather than dropped. The funnel events fire so bidding has signal, and the base Google tag is present everywhere. When that is in place, Ads and your store numbers line up and automated bidding finally works on real data.

Common questions
Why does Google Ads show fewer conversions than my store?
Usually because the conversion tag is blocked by consent, enhanced conversions are off, or purchases are recording through a weaker parallel tag. Each of these drops a share of real conversions. A clean setup with consent mode and enhanced conversions closes most of the gap.
How long do Google Ads conversions take to show?
Most show within a few hours, but some conversion actions have longer attribution and modelling windows, so a very recent conversion may not appear immediately. If sales from several days ago are still missing, it is a tracking problem, not a delay.
Do I need enhanced conversions?
If you run Google Ads, yes. They recover conversions lost to iOS and cross-device journeys by matching hashed first-party data, and they noticeably improve smart bidding. They are one of the highest-impact fixes we make.
