Conversion tracking for Squarespace, done right
Squarespace is a lovely place to build a site and a quietly frustrating place to track one. It is the home of small businesses, creatives, service providers and the odd small shop, and almost all of them think their tracking is set up when it is doing far less than they believe. Here is what actually goes wrong on Squarespace, whether you are chasing leads or selling, and what a clean setup looks like.
Why Squarespace is its own special case
Squarespace trades control for tidiness. You cannot drop code anywhere you like, the checkout is sealed off, and the native Google connection does a fraction of what people assume. That means the usual Squarespace tracking problem is not a broken tag, it is tracking that was never really there. The platform makes it easy to feel measured while your leads and sales sail past uncounted.
The five things we see break on Squarespace
1. Code injection is locked on cheaper plans
Custom code and Google Tag Manager only work on the Business and Commerce plans. If you are on the Personal plan there is simply nowhere to put proper tracking, so it cannot be installed at all. Plenty of owners never realise this and assume they are covered, when the platform has quietly closed the door.
2. The native Google connection is pageviews and not much else
Squarespace's built-in Google Analytics link is deliberately basic. It sends pageviews and stops there, with no proper events, no ecommerce and no conversions. So you open GA4, see traffic arriving, and reasonably assume you are set up, when all you actually have is a count of visits.
3. The Commerce checkout is locked, so the purchase goes missing
On Squarespace Commerce the checkout and order-confirmation page are restricted, so you cannot freely drop the purchase event where it needs to sit. The result is a purchase that fires unreliably or not at all, and when it does fire it often arrives without the order value or transaction data that makes it worth anything.
4. Forms and Acuity bookings fire no conversion at all
For most Squarespace sites the whole point is a form fill or a booking, yet Squarespace Forms and Acuity Scheduling rarely fire a generate_lead or conversion event by themselves. A lead comes in, a slot gets booked, and nothing reaches GA4 or your ad platforms, so Google and Meta have nothing to optimise towards.
5. The cookie banner is wired to nothing
Squarespace's cookie banner is easy to switch on and rarely connected to your actual tags. So the banner sits there looking compliant while tags fire before consent, or get blocked outright, instead of being gated through Google Consent Mode. That is measurable data lost and a real UK and EU compliance risk at the same time.

Done properly, you are on a plan that allows code injection, with a real GA4 and Google Tag Manager setup rather than the native pageview link. If you run on leads, every successful Squarespace form and every Acuity booking fires a proper generate_lead conversion, so Google and Meta finally have something to optimise on. If you sell, the purchase fires reliably from the confirmation page with full order value and transaction data, deduplicated across GA4, Meta and Google. And your cookie banner is wired into Consent Mode so tags wait for consent instead of firing blind or being blocked. When that is in place, your reports match reality and your ads have something real to learn from.

See how it works & pricingCommon Squarespace tracking questions
Can I add tracking to a Squarespace Personal plan?
Not properly. Code injection and Google Tag Manager only work on Business and Commerce plans, so a Personal-plan site has nowhere to put real tracking. Moving up a plan is usually the first fix.
Why does my Google Analytics only show pageviews?
Because the native Squarespace connection only sends pageviews. It looks like tracking, but there are no events, ecommerce or conversions until you add a proper GA4 or Google Tag Manager setup through code injection.
Why isn't my form or Acuity booking showing as a conversion?
Squarespace Forms and Acuity rarely fire a conversion event on their own, so the lead or booking happens but nothing reaches GA4 or your ads. The fix is to catch the successful submission and fire a proper conversion.
