How to set up GA4 on Shopify properly
Connecting GA4 to Shopify looks like a two-minute job, and the quick way does get pageviews flowing. But getting accurate purchases and the full ecommerce funnel takes a bit more, because of how Shopify's checkout works.
The connection options
- Google & YouTube app: Shopify's official app links GA4 with little effort and handles basic events.
- Customer Events (Web Pixels): Shopify's sanctioned way to add custom tracking, including GTM, that respects the consent API.
- Hardcoded snippet: quickest but the least consent-aware and the easiest to break.
The checkout catch
The purchase and checkout steps are where setups fall down. Since checkout extensibility replaced checkout.liquid, hardcoded checkout tracking often stops working, leaving purchases missing in GA4. Use Shopify's supported events so the purchase fires with the order value and ID.
Do it right
Use the Google app or Customer Events for a clean, consent-aware install, confirm the purchase event fires on the real order-confirmed step with value and transaction ID, and verify the full funnel (view item, add to cart, begin checkout, purchase) in DebugView. Then reconcile against Shopify's own analytics so you know the gap is only the expected consent and blocking loss.
